Today the socially conservative factions generally vote Republican and the progressive factions generally vote for the Democratic party.
So yes, Thurmond and Goldwater are fine places to look, but is as fine as any other place. History is complex enough without twisting the story of the South and the progressive factions into a modern pretzel. Some factions have always been for small government, some for big government, the parties and times changed and the factions changed along with them, all of this is interconnected.
Also party loyalty is a factor.
